Jacob Zuma Hospital Update: Foundation Denies Discharge Reports as Family Requests Privacy

Jacob Zuma Hospital Update

Reports that former president Jacob Zuma has left hospital have been challenged by his foundation, leaving supporters awaiting clarity on the health of the man who remains at the centre of the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party.

eNCA reported on Tuesday morning that the 84-year-old had been discharged from a Pietermaritzburg hospital. However, the Jacob Zuma Foundation denied the report, saying he had not been released.

1. Conflicting reports over Zumas’ hospital discharge

In its report published at 10:30am on 13 October, eNCA said Zuma had been discharged from Netcare St Anne’s Hospital. It also reported that doctors were expected to assess his condition on Tuesday before deciding whether he could travel to his Nkandla homestead.

The broadcaster’s article includes the foundation’s denial, making clear that the discharge report is disputed.

Foundation spokesperson Mzwanele Manyi told The Citizen: “Reports that H.E. President Zuma has been discharged are not true.”

Jacaranda FM’s update at 12:52pm likewise reported the foundation’s denial. A confirmed discharge date could therefore not be established from these accounts.

2. What has the family said?

Zuma’s brother, Khanya Zuma, has asked for privacy while the family deals with the former president’s illness.

Speaking to The National on Monday, 12 October, he described repeated enquiries from the media and public and said the family needed time and space. He declined to provide a fresh update on Zuma’s condition, saying the family would communicate when required.

His comments are an on-record response from a family member, separate from the foundation’s statements. No formal family-issued statement confirming Zuma’s discharge was verified for this article.

3. Foundation offers reassurance

The foundation has rejected reports that Zuma is critically ill. The Witness quoted Manyi describing him as being in high spirits and saying the foundation would inform the public of developments.

Earlier, the MK Party described Zuma’s hospital visit as a routine medical check-up and said he was in good spirits.

These reassurances come from the party and foundation. No hospital or treating-doctor bulletin confirming his diagnosis, discharge or readiness to resume campaigning was verified for this article.

4. Why his health matters to MK supporters

Zuma remains the MK Party’s leader and a central figure in its public identity. Reporting by the Mail & Guardian has highlighted the importance of his popularity to MK’s municipal-election campaign, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal.

For his loyal supporters, updates about his recovery carry personal significance alongside their political importance. His prominence helps explain the attention surrounding his hospital stay and the need for clear, carefully attributed information.

His hospitalisation alone does not establish a change in party leadership or a leadership crisis.

5. What happens next?

For now, the central question remains unresolved: eNCA reports a discharge, while the Jacob Zuma Foundation says he has not been discharged.

Any confirmation of his release, return to Nkandla or resumption of public appearances should be reported with a clear source and date. Until then, the family’s request for privacy and the foundation’s denial remain essential parts of the story.

This is a developing story. Information reflects reports checked on 13 October 2026.
